Designing a Better Way to Throw Things Away

It's 6:40 on a Tuesday. A driver pulls up to a clothing bin behind a grocery store. The door is jammed and there are bags on the ground. The driver notes it on the sheet, takes a picture on their own phone, and heads to the next stop.

Back at the office, nobody sees it until the sheet comes back. By then the store manager has already called.

That's what throwing things away looks like from the other side. Bins, trucks, drivers, and a lot of people holding the day together by hand.

The work is fine. The tools aren't.

Collection operators run some of the hardest schedules there are. Hundreds of locations. Property owners who want the bin kept clean. A driver who calls out. A truck that won't start. A plan that changes before lunch.

Most of it runs on a sheet for locations, a separate routing tool, a GPS tracker, and a group text for everything that changed. Each one is fine on its own. Together, they turn one person into the glue, re-keying the day into a spreadsheet after everyone else has gone home.

What better feels like

Better isn't another dashboard. It's a driver finishing a stop without thinking about the app. It's dispatch seeing the jammed bin at 6:41, not on Thursday. It's an owner knowing how the week went without asking three people.

That's the bar we design to. Every screen, every word, every stop. If a driver has to stop and figure it out, we're not done.

Why design

Throwing something away should be the easy part. For the people who collect it, it rarely is. The tools they use every day deserve the same care as the phone in their pocket.

So that's the job: make collection feel obvious.
